My Notes

People have been led to believe that you have to do certain types of exercise to lose weight.

That certain exercises, burn fat. You need to run, you need to do cardio, or 15-minute HIIT fat melting workouts!

The truth is, no form of exercise, no specific movement “burns fat”.

The only way to lose fat is to create a calorie deficit

so until you are consuming fewer calories than you expend, no matter what exercises you do you won’t “burn fat”

which is why getting on top of your nutrition is the first priority.

Obviously, exercise does play a part

the more exercise you do the more energy you expend the more likely you are to be in a calorie deficit.

However remember your training will equate to just 5% of your total daily energy expenditure on average over the course of a week.

So there are other things for you to focus on, that will have a greater impact on creating a calorie deficit

Most importantly, that is controlling your calorie intake, just being more generally active (increasing your NEAT) and hitting your step target.

I am not trying to play down the benefits and importance of exercise and training

I Just want to highlight, that it plays a smaller part in our overall energy expenditure than you may expect.

So I want you to stop looking at fat loss as a direct result of training or exercise

Instead you can focus on the types of exercise or activity that you do enjoy and all of the other amazing benefits that you get from exercise.

Not one person I’ve spoken to didn’t also talk about the importance of these benefits, and how they’d improve their lives as well

Whether you want to feel fitter and stronger, or have fewer niggling pains, or improve your health physically and or mentally

the list of other benefits we get from exercise is endless.

so it’s important to remember exercise isn’t all about fat loss

If your focus in the gym or whilst training is on these other benefits, getting fitter or stronger, you will enjoy the process a lot more and start to recognise the progress you are making elsewhere

Rather than it being all about burning as many calories as possible.
